Zechariah 9

There is a distinct tension in the opening of Zechariah 9. The chapter begins with a sweeping account of judgment—a heavy, inevitable march across the nations of the ancient world. It is a reminder of a God who sees the rise and fall of empires, who holds the scales of justice, and whose word has weight across the map. We expect a figure of immense power to emerge from such a setting, perhaps a conquering hero on a warhorse, ready to enforce his will.

But then, we get a jarring, glorious pivot: "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion... behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey" (Zechariah 9:9).

This is the central paradox of the prophecy. In a world defined by the "might" of the surrounding nations—the chariots and the bow—this King chooses a different path entirely. He does not arrive with the spectacle of worldly dominance. He does not come to seize territory through intimidation. He comes with righteousness, and he comes with salvation, riding on the back of a beast of burden.

Redefining Strength

This image challenges our default assumptions about what it looks like for God to intervene in our lives. We often pray for the "horse and chariot" solution: we want the show of force, the sudden removal of obstacles, and the immediate enforcement of justice. We look for power that shouts. Yet, Zechariah introduces us to a King whose power is expressed in humility, whose authority is rooted in character rather than coercion, and whose primary objective is the restoration of his people.

The rest of the chapter unfolds with a promise of God’s deep affection for those He protects. He speaks of prisoners being set free and his people being defended. It is a vision of flourishing that stands in stark contrast to the destruction that preceded it. The goodness and beauty described in verse 17 are the natural outcome of a King who rules not by crushing his subjects, but by being among them.

The Invitation to Recalibrate

Reflecting on this passage today, I am captivated by the invitation to recalibrate my own understanding of strength. It is easy to equate spiritual health with visible "conquest"—with seeing our own plans succeed or our personal standards met. But the King in Zechariah 9 invites us to look for him in the quiet, the humble, and the seemingly insignificant.

Living under this King means recognizing that the most transformative work often happens in the places that look "weak" to the world. It means trusting that righteousness and salvation are more potent than any show of force I could conjure up myself. As we look at the promises in this chapter—the restoration, the defense, and the promise of a flourishing people—we are reminded that the true "victory" is found in aligning our hearts with the one who came not to conquer for himself, but to save for us.

How, then, do we receive such a King? By setting aside our expectations of how he should manifest his power, and instead, opening the doors of our lives to the One who arrives with peace, righteousness, and an invitation to belong to a kingdom that is fundamentally different from anything else the world offers.
