Zechariah 5

In Zechariah 5, the prophet is confronted with two jarring visions that strip away any illusion of casual spirituality. The first is a massive flying scroll, thirty feet long and fifteen feet wide, inscribed with a curse that goes out over the face of the whole land. This isn’t a hidden decree; it is public, unavoidable, and active. It represents the holiness of God’s law entering the very homes of those who steal and those who swear falsely.

There is a sobering reality in this image: sin is not merely a private failing, but a disruption of God’s order that invites His inevitable judgment. The scroll enters the house to consume it, reminding us that God’s holiness cannot coexist with unrepentant wickedness. It challenges us to consider the integrity of our own lives behind closed doors. Are we living in a way that aligns with the truth of the Word, or are we harboring habits that the flying scroll would find and expose?

The Woman in the Basket: The Removal of Iniquity

The second vision shifts from the declaration of judgment to the necessity of purification. Zechariah sees an ephah—a common measuring basket—containing a woman who personifies wickedness. A leaden cover is cast over the basket, and two winged women carry it far away to the land of Shinar. This is a powerful picture of God’s active work in removing sin from the midst of His people.

Purification is rarely a gentle process. The leaden weight ensures the wickedness is contained, and the journey to a distant land signifies a total separation. For the believer, this vision offers both a warning and a profound hope. The warning is that God will not allow sin to remain indefinitely in His presence; the hope is that He is the one who provides the means to carry that weight away. We are incapable of cleansing ourselves, but the Gospel reveals a God who is committed to the holiness of His community.

A Call to Reflective Repentance

As we sit with the imagery of Zechariah 5, we are invited into a space of earnest reflection. These visions are not meant to drive us to despair, but to a deeper awe of God’s character. We serve a God who is light and in whom there is no darkness at all. Because He loves us, He refuses to let us remain comfortably in our sin.

Today, let us ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any "filth" that has taken up residence in our hearts. Let us embrace the purification that God offers through Christ, trusting that as He removes our iniquity, He is making us a dwelling place fit for His glory. May we walk in the lightness that 


comes from knowing our sin has been carried away, and may our lives reflect the holiness of the One who called us out of darkness.
