Zechariah 10

In a culture that prides itself on self-sufficiency and immediate answers, the opening verse of Zechariah 10 strikes a different chord entirely: "Ask rain from the Lord in the season of the spring rain " (Zechariah 10:1). It is an invitation to dependence. It suggests that there are seasons of life where our own efforts, however diligent, cannot produce the harvest we desire. We need the "rain" that only God can send.

Looking Beyond the Noise

We are often tempted to look for direction in the modern idols of culture, the endless scroll of data, or the shifting opinions of the world. Verse 2 tells us that these things "speak nonsense" and provide only empty comfort. When I reflect on this, I realize how easy it is to find myself wandering like a sheep without a shepherd, distracted by the noise, looking for peace in places that simply cannot offer it. We seek stability in systems and strategies, but Zechariah points us back to a Shepherd who is active, present, and concerned for the flock.

The Stability of the Cornerstone

There is a striking shift in this chapter regarding leadership and strength. While human leadership can falter, God Himself acts as the Cornerstone and the Tent Peg. He is the anchor for our lives. In moments when I feel scattered or uncertain, it is a profound comfort to remember that the One who governs history is the same One who gathers His people.

I am particularly struck by the promise: "I will bring them back because I have compassion on them" (Zechariah 10:6). God’s intervention isn't born out of obligation; it is born out of compassion. He does not treat us as a project to be managed, but as a people to be cherished. Even when we feel as though we have wandered far—perhaps into our own "Egypt" or "Assyria"—God’s desire is to whistle for His people and bring them home.

Walking in His Strength

The chapter concludes with a powerful image: the people will be strengthened in the Lord and shall walk in His name. This isn't about conjuring up our own resolve to do better; it is about living in the overflow of the strength He provides.

As I reflect on these verses, my prayer is to be more attentive to the Lord’s voice and less distracted by the "diviners of lies." I want to learn to wait for the rain He sends rather than trying to irrigate my own life with the dry wells of worldly wisdom.
