Psalm 9

5/9/2026

Psalm 9 is a powerful transition from the quiet contemplation of the cosmos in Psalm 8 to a bold, public declaration of God’s righteous judgment in the face of human opposition. It’s a Psalm that doesn’t shy away from the reality of enemies or the presence of the "wicked," yet it remains anchored in an unshakeable confidence in the Lord’s throne.

Wholehearted Praise

The Psalm opens with a beautiful, resolute commitment: “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds” (Psalm 9:1). This isn’t a fragmented or distracted gratitude. It’s wholehearted. In our modern world, where our attention is pulled in a thousand directions, there is something deeply convicting about this call to recount—to literally list out—the wonderful deeds of God in our lives.

The Throne of Judgment

As David moves into the core of the Psalm, he reflects on God as the righteous Judge. He says, “But the Lord sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice, and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness” (Psalm 9:7-8). This is incredibly comforting when we look at the world around us. When we see injustice, when we feel the weight of systems that seem broken, or when we face personal "enemies" who seek to undermine us, we are reminded that there is a higher court. God’s throne is not temporary; it is established forever.

A Stronghold for the Oppressed

One of the most encouraging promises in this text is found in verse 9: “The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble” (Psalm 9:9). The word "stronghold" implies a high place, a refuge that is out of reach of the enemy. It reminds me of the "unshakable favor" we discussed when looking at our identity in Christ. When we know His name—His character, His faithfulness—we put our trust in Him because we know He does not forsake those who seek Him.

Psalm 9 challenges us to live as people who believe in the sovereign justice of God. It calls us to be those who “sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion” and to “tell among the peoples his deeds!” (Psalm 9:11). In our own ministry and daily walk, may we be as bold as David. May we trust that the One who remembers the cry of the afflicted will also remember us. Today, I choose to recount His wonderful deeds and take refuge in the Stronghold of my salvation.
