Psalm 8

Psalm 8 shifts our gaze entirely from our distress to the sheer, overwhelming majesty of the Creator. It begins and ends with a declaration that anchors us: “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1, 9).

This Psalm challenges all of the various things of life that often consume us. When we are caught up in our own “performance”, the world can feel enormous, and God can feel distant. David’s response is to step outside and look up: at the "heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars" (Psalm 8:3). When confronted with the immensity of God’s creation, we are reminded that our plots and our worries are “vain”. They are dwarfed by the Lord who has “set his glory above the heavens” (Psalm 8:1).

What is Man?

The pivot in verse 4 is one of the most astonishing questions in all of Scripture: “what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:4). After gazing at the cosmos, David rightly feels small. Yet, immediately following the question of our smallness, we are given the answer of our staggering worth. We are “crowned… with glory and honor” and “given… dominion over the works of [His] hands” (Psalm 8:5-8).

This is a promise of identity that points directly to the finished work of Jesus. We don't find our righteousness in our own merit; our inherent worth is not earned, but given by the Creator. This glory and honor, though initially given to humanity, was fully and perfectly realized in Jesus Christ, the true Son of Man, who perfectly fulfilled the role of dominion. For us, the fully adopted children of God, we live not as slaves trying to earn our upkeep, but as heirs of this restored dignity. Our head is lifted up by the One who cares for us.

Refuge in the Crown

Psalm 8 reminds us that the same God whose name is majestic in all the earth is the same God who is mindful of us. We are secure, covered with His “unshakable favor”. The final declaration—a full-circle return to praise—is our proper response. Today, I choose to take refuge in the Son, trusting that He is reigning over all.

I love the psalms of worship; the ones that extol the majesty of the Lord! David puts into words what I can only feel. Poetry isn’t my favorite reading material but this one captures my imagination. Our God is so glorious, so wonderful and majestic yet He created me. How wonderful is that? Thank You, Father, for being the great I AM and for creating me.
