Psalm 31

5/31/2026

Here is the reading plan for June! After today, we will take a break from the Psalms and look at other areas of Scripture. Don't worry, though, we will come back to the Psalms later on and keep exploring them.

Psalm 31 is a raw and honest cry from a heart under pressure, yet it is simultaneously a profound declaration of trust. It speaks to the universal human experience of feeling besieged—whether by external circumstances, internal anxieties, or the weight of transition. For those of us leading and serving in our communities, it serves as a vital reminder that our ultimate security is never found in our own strength or strategies, but in the character of God.

A Personal Refuge

The Psalmist begins with a definitive choice: "In you, O Lord, do I take refuge" (Psalm 31:1). This is an active running toward God. In my own journey, especially during times of launching into new seasons or navigating the trouble Jesus promised we would face, I've learned that peace isn't the absence of the storm, but the presence of the Fortress. When we feel cast down or in turmoil, we are invited to hope in God because He is our salvation.

Trusting Through the Fog

There are seasons where we see only dimly, like through a fog. Psalm 31 acknowledges this distress, describing eyes wasted with grief and life spent in sorrow. Yet, even in the low places, we discover that God is deeper still. We can echo the words of the psalmist: "My times are in your hand" (Psalm 31:15). This surrender releases us from the burden of having all the answers, allowing us to trust that the One who shepherded David from the sheepfolds to the throne is still skillfully guiding us today.

Delivered into a Broad Place

Deliverance in Psalm 31 is described as God setting our feet "in a broad place" (Psalm 31:8). This is the incredible promise of eternal life and the peace to deal with our present. As we seek the Lord without distraction, joining together in humility and faith, we find that His abundant goodness is stored up for those who fear Him.
Today, whatever adversity you are facing, may you find the courage to deal with your future by taking heart in the One who has already overcome the world. Let us be strong and let our heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord.
