Psalm 3

5/3/2026

Psalm 3 begins not in a sanctuary of quiet, but in the heat of a crisis. David is fleeing from his own son, Absalom. The opposition isn't just distant nations; it's intimate and overwhelming. He cries out, "O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me" (Psalm 3:1). In our own lives, the "many" might not be physical enemies, but the noise of comparison, guilt, or the crushing weight of performance—a "clamor of activity."

The most piercing part of David's trial is the spiritual taunt: "Many are saying of my soul, 'There is no salvation for him in God'" (Psalm 3:2). It is one thing to face trouble; it is another to be told that God has abandoned you. Yet, it is precisely at this point of total vulnerability that David shifts his focus.

A Shield and the Lifter of My Head

Instead of looking at the "many," David looks at the "But You." "But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head" (Psalm 3:3). This is the anchor of a true disciple—finding our identity not in our circumstances or our "win" in the world, but entirely in the finished work of God. When the weight of the world tries to bow our heads in shame or exhaustion, He is the one who lifts them up, reminding us that we are His fully adopted children.

The Rest of the Rooted

David’s trust is so profound that it manifests in a physical way: "I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me" (Psalm 3:5). To sleep in the middle of a rebellion is the ultimate act of defiance against fear. It reminds me of the rooted tree in Psalm 1—intentional, cared for, and sustained by a source outside itself. We do not need to stay awake plotting our own defense when we know the Lord is our refuge.

Reflecting on Salvation

David concludes with a declaration of sovereignty: "Salvation belongs to the Lord; your blessing be on your people!" (Psalm 3:8). As I reflect on this today, I want to quiet the noise and listen to the whisper of the Spirit. Whether the nations rage or my own heart plots in vain, I choose to take refuge in the Son, trusting that He is reigning over all and that His peace can settle deep into my heart.
