Psalm 16

5/16/2026

This Psalm begins with a profound and simple plea: "Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge" (Psalm 16:1). This short line is not a passive wish but a declaration of choice. In a world of chaos and shifting foundations, the Psalmist declares that he has actively chosen the Lord as his only safe haven. This choice is exclusive, requiring a rejection of the world's false gods—the idols that promise refuge but deliver only sorrow. This mirrors our ongoing need to quiet the noise and find our refuge in the Son.

My Portion and Inheritance

The heart of the Psalm shifts from defense to delight when the writer says, "The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot" (Psalm 16:5). This is a statement of ultimate satisfaction. It reminds me that my stability is not based on the fluctuating tides of humanity or my current circumstances, but on the unshakable foundation of God’s character.

The land, the inheritance, the future—all of it is bound up in the Lord himself. “The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance" (Psalm 16:6). This beautiful inheritance is made possible not by our impossible effort to be blameless, but by the finished work of Jesus. He is the only one who perfectly maintained His devotion to the Father, securing for us the right as fully adopted children of God who inherit it through His grace.

The Fullness of Joy

The Psalm concludes with a stunning declaration of hope that looks far beyond the grave, pointing directly to the resurrection: "For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore" (Psalm 16:10-11).

These verses are the foundation of our ultimate security. It reminds me that while tribulation is promised in this world, we can take heart because Christ has already overcome it. The "holy one" who will not see corruption is perfectly fulfilled in Jesus. Because He was raised, we know the path of life is open, and we are promised an eternal reality where there is "fullness of joy." Our hope is not the absence of trouble in this life, but the presence of the King forever.

As I reflect on this, I choose to find my refuge in the Son, trusting that because of Him, my portion is secure and my future is defined by an eternal, unshakable joy.
