Psalm 14

Psalm 14 provides a sobering look at the condition of a world that attempts to function apart from its Creator. It begins with a blunt assessment of the human heart: “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” (Psalm 14:1). This isn’t just about intellectual atheism; it’s about a practical atheism where we live as if God’s sovereignty doesn't matter, leading to a life of corruption and abominable deeds.

The Divine Search

The Psalmist describes God looking down from heaven to see if there are any who understand or seek after Him. The verdict is universal: “They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one” (Psalm 14:3). This mirrors the reality we see in our own world—the distractions that can lead us into a double heart of spiritual sickness.

The Refuge of the Poor

The evildoers in this Psalm eat up God's people like bread and do not call upon the Lord. They try to confound the plans of the poor, "but the Lord is his refuge" (Psalm 14:6). This is where my heart finds its anchor. Even when we feel overlooked or oppressed by the world around us, we are reminded that God is with the generation of the righteous.

Ultimate Hope in the Son

The Psalm concludes with a longing for restoration: “Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!” (Psalm 14:7). For us, this longing is fulfilled in the finished work of Jesus. We don't have to earn our way in or be slaves trying to earn our upkeep. Instead, we are fully adopted children of God who have found our salvation in the Son.

I choose to quiet the noise of a world that says "there is no God." I choose to take refuge in the Son, trusting that He is reigning over all and that His unshakable favor covers me like a shield. My heart shall rejoice in His salvation because He has dealt bountifully with me.
