Psalm 10

Psalm 10 is a raw and honest cry from the depths of the human experience. It begins with a question that many of us have whispered in our quietest, darkest moments: "Why, O Lord, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?" (Psalm 10:1). This isn't a lack of faith, but rather the desperate plea of a soul that knows God is the only source of help, yet feels a painful distance from His presence.

The Illusion of the Wicked’s Prosperity

The Psalmist vividly describes the "wicked"—those who live as if God does not exist or does not care. They appear to prosper, boasting of their hearts' desires and even cursing the Lord. In their pride, they think, "I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity" (Psalm 10:6).

It can be profoundly discouraging to look at the world and see the arrogant apparently succeeding while the poor and helpless are oppressed. We might find ourselves asking if our pursuit of righteousness is in vain when the world seems to reward the ruthless.

I often find myself feeling frustrated when I see people succeed through dishonesty. It’s a challenge to remain patient and trust that their "prosperity" is only temporary compared to God's eternal timeline.

The Turning Point: God Sees

The shift in the Psalm occurs when the writer remembers a fundamental truth about God's character: "But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands" (Psalm 10:14). God is not indifferent. He is not blind to injustice. He is the helper of the fatherless, and to Him, the helpless commit themselves. This is where our hope is anchored. His silence is not absence, and His delay is not a denial of justice.

Remembering that God is the helper of the fatherless refocuses my heart. It reminds me that even when I feel overlooked by the world, I am seen by the Creator.

Ultimate Hope in His Justice

The Psalm concludes with a triumphant declaration of God's sovereignty: "The Lord is king forever and ever" (Psalm 10:16). He hears the desire of the afflicted and strengthens their hearts. Our ultimate hope is that God will "do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more" (Psalm 10:18).

This declaration of God’s kingship gives me peace. It helps me let go of the need to control every outcome, knowing that the ultimate justice is in His hands. As we walk through our own times of trouble, may we hold fast to the promise that the King is on His throne, and His righteous judgment will have the final word.
