Micah 1

Today, we begin to look at the book of Micah. As we begin, take a look at this overview from the Bible Project.

The book of Micah doesn’t ease us into the narrative. It begins with a trembling earth and a descent from heaven. Micah paints a terrifyingly beautiful picture: "For behold, the Lord is coming out of his place, and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth. And the mountains will melt under him, and the valleys will split open, like wax before the fire, like waters poured down a steep place" (Micah 1:3-4).

I’ve been sitting with these verses this morning, and they strike a chord of profound reverence. We often talk about God being "near," a comfort that brings peace. But Micah reminds us of another facet of God’s nearness—His holiness, which is so pure and so consuming that the very foundations of the earth cannot stand in its presence.

The Holiness of His Presence

When I read about the mountains melting like wax, I am forced to confront my own triviality. How often do I try to stand tall in my own "high places"—my pride, my plans, my self-reliance? When the presence of the Almighty draws near, those mountains of self-importance don’t just crack; they dissolve.

Yet, this isn’t just a scene of destruction. It is a scene of accountability. The prophet speaks of the transgression of Jacob and the sins of the house of Israel. It’s heavy, and it’s meant to be. There is a weight to sin that we often try to ignore, but Micah doesn’t let us look away.

A Call to Holy Lament

What strikes me most is the reaction of the prophet. Micah isn’t detached. He isn’t gleefully announcing judgment. Instead, he describes lamenting: "For this I will lament and wail; I will go stripped and naked; I will make lamentation like the jackals, and mourning like the ostriches" (Micah 1:8).

This is a lesson for me. When we see the brokenness of the world, or even the brokenness within our own hearts, our response shouldn’t be cynicism or cold judgment. It should be mourning. It should be a heart that breaks for the things that break God’s heart.

As I reflect on this chapter, I’m left with a question: If the mountains melt at His presence, what in my life needs to be surrendered to the fire of His holiness? Not to be destroyed, but to be cleansed. I want to walk in the fear of the Lord, not a fear that drives me away, but a fear that invites me to stop "standing tall" in my own strength and instead find my footing on the only Solid Rock.
