Ecclesiastes 7

Ecclesiastes 7 presents us with a jarring kind of wisdom, one that feels entirely foreign to our comfort-seeking hearts. It tells us that the house of mourning is better than the house of feasting and that sorrow is better than laughter. On the surface, this feels like a cold invitation to a somber life, but as we sit with these words, a deeper, more beautiful truth emerges: sorrow has a unique way of making the heart glad by stripping away the superficial and forcing us to face reality.

The Value of Correction and Humility

We live in a culture that idolizes the "quick fix" and the "feel good," yet the Preacher reminds us that the rebuke of the wise is more life-giving than the song of fools. To value a rebuke requires a profound humility. It means admitting that we don’t have all the answers and that our own paths are often misguided. It is in the quiet, reflective space of sorrow and correction that we are refined, finding a clarity that fleeting pleasures could never provide.

Trusting God’s Sovereign Design

Perhaps the most challenging call in this chapter is the command to consider God’s work when life feels "crooked." We often spend our lives trying to straighten what we believe is bent—to fix the unexplainable suffering or the perceived unfairness of our circumstances. But the Preacher asks a piercing question: “Who can make straight what he has made crooked?” (Ecclesiastes 7:13).

Trusting God’s sovereignty means more than just praising Him when the path is level; it means trusting His hand when the road is winding and the logic is hidden from our sight. God has balanced the days of prosperity with the days of adversity specifically so that we cannot predict the future. This lack of control is not meant to drive us to despair, but to drive us to Him. It forces us to stop trying to be the masters of our own fate and instead rest in the wisdom of the One who sees the end from the beginning.

I must confess that I often find myself resisting this wisdom. In my own life, when the road becomes crooked, my first instinct is to seize the wheel and try to force it straight. Yet, looking back, the moments of greatest uncertainty—the times where my own plans crumbled—have been the very moments I’ve felt the most desperate need for God’s steadying presence. It is in those spaces of weakness, where I finally stop trying to be the master of my fate, that I truly begin to experience the peace of resting in His sovereign hand.

Today, let us ask for the grace to stay in the "house of mourning" long enough to learn what God is teaching. Let us embrace the "crooked" parts of our story, not as mistakes to be corrected by our own strength, but as divine appointments intended to foster a healthy fear of the Lord and a deeper dependence on His perfect timing.
