Ecclesiastes 6

Have you ever reached a goal, purchased something you long desired, or finally achieved a level of stability you worked years for, only to feel... nothing? Or perhaps worse, to feel a lingering sense of "Is this it?"

Ecclesiastes 6 is a sobering mirror held up to the human heart. Solomon writes about a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to enjoy them. It’s a haunting image: having everything in your hands but being unable to taste the sweetness of it.

Possessions vs. Power to Enjoy

This passage teaches us a profound spiritual truth: earthly blessings and the capacity to enjoy those blessings are two distinct gifts. We often spend our lives chasing the first, assuming the second comes as a package deal. But Solomon calls this "vanity" and a "grievous evil." When we seek satisfaction in the things themselves, we find that possessions apart from a relationship with the Giver are like saltwater—the more we drink, the thirstier we become.

"All the toil of man is for his mouth, yet his appetite is not satisfied" (Ecclesiastes 6:7). Whether it’s the literal hunger for food or the metaphorical hunger for status, comfort, or legacy, our human nature is a bottomless pit when left to its own devices. We can live a thousand years twice over, but if we haven’t found the source of true life, we end up in the same place as the one who never lived at all.

Finding Contentment in God’s Sovereignty

So, where is the hope? The shift happens when we stop looking at what is "under the sun" and start looking to the One who reigns above it. True contentment isn't found in having everything we want, but in trusting that God has given us exactly what we need for this moment.

God is sovereign over both the giving and the withholding. When we recognize that even our ability to enjoy a simple meal or a sunset is a grace from His hand, we are freed from the frantic race of accumulation. We can breathe. We can rest.

Encouragement for Today

If you feel unsatisfied today, let that hunger point you to Christ. He is the Bread of Life who truly satisfies. Instead of striving for the "more" that Solomon warns about, let’s pray for the "power to enjoy" the "less" or "enough" that we have right now. Your worth is not in your wealth, and your joy is not in your junk—it is found in the steady, sovereign love of a Father who knows your name.
