Ecclesiastes 5

When we approach the book of Ecclesiastes, we are often struck by the stark, unflinching honesty of the Preacher. In chapter 5, the wisdom shifts from the broader observations of life’s cycles to the practical application of how we approach God and handle the resources we are given. It is a chapter that calls us to pause, reflect, and reorder our spiritual priorities.

Approaching with Reverence

The chapter begins with a sobering instruction: "Guard your steps when you go to the house of God" (Ecclesiastes 5:1). In a culture that often emphasizes casual comfort, the Preacher reminds us that our worship is not merely a social engagement or a routine—it is an encounter with the Creator of the universe.

He warns against "hasty" words or "rash" vows before God. True worship, he suggests, is rooted in listening rather than filling the silence with our own noise. When we rush into God’s presence, we often treat prayer as a transaction or a performance. The invitation here is to stillness—to recognize the vast distance between God in heaven and us on earth, and to respond with the humility that such a distance demands.

The Illusion of Sufficiency

The middle section of the chapter tackles the restlessness of the human heart, particularly regarding wealth and satisfaction. The Preacher notes, "He who loves money will not be satisfied with money" (Ecclesiastes 5:10). It is a timeless truth that resonates deeply in our modern world.

We are constantly told that the next purchase, the next promotion, or the next level of security will provide the peace we crave. Yet, the wisdom of Ecclesiastes suggests that this is a "striving after wind." Wealth can increase, and with it, the number of people who consume it, leaving us with nothing but the pride of ownership. This serves as a vital reminder that our contentment cannot be tethered to what we accumulate, as material things are fragile and inherently fleeting.

The Gift of Enjoyment

However, the chapter is not without hope. The Preacher concludes this reflection with a profound observation: "Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot" (Ecclesiastes 5:18).

This is a liberating perspective. We are not called to despise the work of our hands or the life we have been given. Instead, we are encouraged to accept our work, our wealth, and our daily bread as gifts from God’s hand. The "joyful heart" that God gives is the antidote to the anxiety of accumulation. When we stop trying to build our own kingdom—which we cannot take with us—and instead receive each day as a gift to be enjoyed in gratitude, we find a peace that possessions simply cannot provide.

Ecclesiastes 5 invites us to live with open hands. It asks us to bring our reverence into the house of God, to release our obsession with what we own, and to find true satisfaction in the simple, God-given moments of life. May we learn to listen more, desire less, and receive the joy that only He can provide.
