Ecclesiastes 3

Ecclesiastes 3 presents us with one of the most poignant reflections on the human experience found in all of Scripture. Through the inspired words of Solomon, we are reminded that for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. For the believer, this is more than just a poetic observation about the passage of time; it is a profound declaration of God’s absolute sovereignty over our lives.

Embracing the Sovereignty of the Clock

We often live as though time is an enemy to be managed or a resource to be hoarded. Yet, Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us that God has made everything beautiful in its time. This suggests that the seasons we encounter—whether they be times of planting or plucking up, weeping or laughing—are not random occurrences. They are carefully curated by a Creator who stands outside of time, yet intimately directs every second within it.

Finding peace begins when we stop resisting the season we are in and start looking for God’s hand within it. When we acknowledge that our times are in His hand, the pressure to control our future begins to dissipate. We can breathe deeply, knowing that the rhythm of our lives is being composed by the Master Musician.

Purpose in the Dissonance

It is easy to see God in the "time to dance" and the "time to build up." It is significantly harder to discern His purpose in the "time to mourn" or the "time to lose." However, the gospel reminds us that God often does His deepest work in the dissonance. Just as a field must lie fallow in winter to produce a harvest in spring, our souls often require seasons of quiet, waiting, or even sorrow to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit.

There is no wasted time in the kingdom of God. Every season serves a specific purpose in our sanctification. If you find yourself in a season of "breaking down," take heart. The same God who oversees the dismantling is the one who promises to make all things new. His sovereignty is our safety.

Eternity in Our Hearts

Solomon notes that God has "put eternity into man’s heart" (Ecclesiastes 3:11). This is why we often feel a restless tug against the constraints of time. We were made for more than this temporal world. While we live within the rhythms of day and night, summer and winter, we are anchored to an eternal hope.

Resting in God’s timing means trusting that He sees the end from the beginning. We may only see the current stitch in the tapestry, but He sees the finished masterpiece. Today, let us lay down our calendars and our anxieties at the feet of Jesus, finding peace in the truth that He is the Lord over every season of our lives.
