Ecclesiastes 12

As we reach the final chapter of Ecclesiastes, the tone shifts from the philosophical to the deeply personal and immediate. The Preacher, having wrestled through the complexities of life, brings us to a quiet, profound realization: our time is finite, and our focus is paramount.

Ecclesiastes 12 begins with a verse that serves as a lighthouse for every season of life: "Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you will say, 'I have no pleasure in them'" (Ecclesiastes 12:1). 

There is a weight to these words. They remind us that the "remembering"—the active, intentional acknowledgement of God—is not meant to be a retirement plan or a last-minute adjustment. It is a lifelong orientation. To remember the Creator is to recognize that we are not the authors of our own stories. We are the created, and we exist in relation to the One who breathed life into us.

A Lifelong Orientation

The imagery that follows in verses 2 through 7 is striking. It is a poetic, somber description of the physical decline that accompanies aging. From the dimming light of the sun and stars to the trembling of the keepers of the house, Solomon paints a portrait of fragility. It is a stark reminder that our physical bodies are temporary vessels.

In a culture that often works tirelessly to preserve youth and avoid the conversation of aging, this passage invites us to do the opposite: to embrace the reality of our temporality. When we acknowledge that our physical strength will eventually fade, we are liberated. We are freed from the illusion that our value is tied to our capability, our appearance, or our energy levels. Instead, we are pointed toward something that does not decay.

The Whole Duty of Man

The Preacher eventually moves past the descriptions of life’s end to the "end of the matter." After everything has been heard, the conclusion is piercingly simple: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man" (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

This is not a call to fear in the sense of cowering, but in the sense of profound, reverent awe. It is a re-centering of our existence. When we fix our gaze on the character of God—on His holiness, His justice, and His mercy—everything else finds its proper place. We no longer need to be consumed by the temporary, because we have tethered our souls to the Eternal.

As we look at our own lives, whether we are in the morning, the noon, or the evening of our years, the invitation remains the same. We are called to "remember." We are called to walk in the light of His truth.

Life is a gift, and our days are numbered, but that is not cause for sorrow. It is cause for worship. Because God is the one who holds our days, our work, and our future, we can live with a settled heart. We can be diligent, we can be kind, and we can be faithful, knowing that our lives are not vanishing into nothingness, but are being held by the One who loves us and who will one day judge every deed, both good and evil, with perfect wisdom.

May our final reflection—and our daily confession—be this: that we belong to Him, and that in the fear of the Lord, we find the only true stability in a shifting world.
