Ecclesiastes 1

As we continue to power through some of the smaller books of the Old Testament this month, we now find ourselves in Ecclesiastes. Take a look at the overview before digging in:

“Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity” (Ecclesiastes 1:2)

These opening words of Ecclesiastes can feel like a cold splash of water. In a world that constantly encourages us to build, achieve, and accumulate, the Preacher (Kohelet) steps in to remind us that under the sun, much of our striving is like "striving after wind" (Ecclesiastes 1:14).

The Cycle of Worldly Striving

As we reflect on the first chapter of this profound book, we are confronted with the cyclical and transient nature of life. The sun rises and sets, the wind blows in circles, and the streams flow into a sea that is never full. There is a weariness in the repetition of a world that seems indifferent to our individual efforts. We often find ourselves caught in a similar cycle—chasing the next promotion, the next possession, or the next moment of recognition, only to find that the satisfaction we sought is fleeting.

The Preacher’s observation that "there is nothing new under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 1:9) isn't meant to lead us to despair, but to a deeper realization. If we anchor our purpose solely in things that are "under the sun"—the physical, the material, and the temporary—we will eventually find them wanting. Our worldly pursuits, no matter how noble or successful, cannot carry the weight of our eternal souls.

Anchoring Our Purpose

So, where do we find our anchor? We look to the One who is above the sun. While our work here is temporary, our labor in the Lord is never in vain. When we shift our focus from the transience of the world to the permanence of God's kingdom, our perspective changes. We no longer strive to create meaning for ourselves; instead, we participate in the meaning God has already established.

This week, I encourage you to take a moment to evaluate your "striving." Are you exhausted from chasing the wind? Remember that your value is not found in the novelty of your achievements or the abundance of your possessions. Your true purpose is anchored in the unchanging nature of God. Let us find rest in the knowledge that while this world passes away, the Word of our God stands forever.

May we live with hearts set on things above, finding joy in the simple gifts of today while keeping our eyes fixed on our eternal home.
