Amos 7

Amos 7 feels like a turning point in the prophecy. Up to this point, the message has been a consistent, thundering warning against the nations and against Israel. But in chapter 7, the rhythm shifts. We aren’t just hearing the declaration of judgment anymore; we are watching the heart of the prophet grapple with the reality of it.

The Burden of Intercession

The chapter begins with two visions—the locusts and the fire. In both instances, Amos sees the destruction coming, and in both instances, his response is immediate intercession: "O Lord God, please forgive!" (Amos 7:2).

There is something deeply moving about Amos’s posture here. He doesn't just stand back and watch the destruction with a "told you so" attitude. He pleads. He looks at the frailty of his people and recognizes that they cannot withstand the judgment. It reminds me that the prophetic call isn't about enjoying the downfall of others; it is about carrying a burden for them. It’s about standing in the gap when you see the storm clouds gathering. It challenges me: Do I carry that same burden for my community? Do I plead for mercy with the same desperation that Amos shows?

The Plumb Line of Truth

Then, we arrive at the vision of the plumb line. God stands beside a wall built with a plumb line, and He holds one up against His people.

The imagery is simple but devastating. A plumb line doesn't lie. It doesn't adjust its standard to accommodate the lean of the wall. It shows exactly how far things have shifted from the vertical. We often try to measure our lives against our own standards—or against the cultural norms of our neighbors—and we find ourselves looking reasonably straight. But God measures against His own holiness.

This is an uncomfortable realization. It suggests that our spiritual "wall" might be leaning significantly, even if we’ve spent our lives trying to smooth over the cracks. It forces us to ask: Am I walking according to my own comfortable standard, or am I aligning myself with the absolute, unchanging truth of God?

The Courage of the Called

The chapter ends with a collision between Amos and Amaziah, the priest of Bethel. It’s a classic tension between the establishment and the call of God. Amaziah wants Amos to go back to Judah, to be quiet, to leave Bethel alone. He represents the comfort of the status quo—he doesn't want the boat rocked.

Amos’s defense is simple: he didn't choose this life; he was taken from his work as a shepherd, and God told him to go.

There is a powerful lesson in this interaction. When we choose to follow the plumb line of God’s truth, we will inevitably encounter opposition. There will always be "Amaziahs" who prefer the ease of the current arrangement over the discomfort of a prophetic word. Standing true to the call doesn't mean being abrasive or looking for a fight; it simply means refusing to stop speaking the truth that God has placed on your heart, regardless of whether it is well-received.

Amos 7 is a reminder that while God is patient, He is also precise. He is measuring us. May we have the courage to submit to His plumb line, the heart to intercede for others, and the resolve to remain faithful, even when the path is lonely.
