1 Samuel 3

In our current culture, noise is the default. Between the constant notifications on our phones and the internal chatter of our to-do lists, silence can feel almost uncomfortable. As I look at 1 Samuel 3, I am struck by a different kind of silence—a spiritual one. The narrative begins with a sobering observation: "the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision" (1 Samuel 3:1). Samuel was growing up in a world where God’s voice seemed distant, almost a memory of a bygone era.

The Sound of the Unknown

I find so much comfort in Samuel’s initial confusion. Three times the Lord calls him, and three times he runs to Eli, thinking his mentor is the one speaking. Scripture tells us why: "Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him" (1 Samuel 4:7). It’s a reminder that hearing from God is a learned discipline. We aren’t born with a perfectly tuned spiritual ear; we must grow into the ability to distinguish His whisper from the competing voices in our lives.

The Gift of a Mentor

We also see the vital importance of Eli. Despite his own failings and the heavy judgment hanging over his house, Eli still possessed the wisdom to recognize the Divine at work. He doesn't dismiss Samuel's confusion. Instead, he provides the pivotal guidance Samuel needs to transition from hearing a "noise" to receiving a "message." He gives him the words of response: "Speak, Lord, for your servant hears" (1 Samuel 3:9). This highlights our own need for mentors—those further along the path who can help us interpret the stirrings of the Spirit in our own hearts.

Creating Space for the Call

So, how do we position ourselves like Samuel in a world that never stops talking? It begins with a posture of readiness. Samuel was "lying down within the temple of the Lord" (1 Samuel 3:3). He was in the right place, waiting in the stillness. 

To hear God today, we must intentionally carve out temple spaces—moments where we set aside the noise and simply offer ourselves. The prayer, "Speak, for your servant hears," is not just a request for information; it is a declaration of submission. It is telling the Father that we are listening, we are available, and we are ready to obey whatever He says.

My prayer today is that, even in times when the word seems rare,  I would remain attentive and ready to answer the call.
