1 Samuel 2

As I’ve been reading through 1 Samuel 2, I’ve found myself dwelling on two very different pictures of life and leadership. This chapter feels like a mirror held up to my own heart, showing me the importance of where I place my trust and how I respond to the presence of God.

A Prayer of Recognition

The chapter opens with Hannah’s prayer. It’s moving to see how quickly her focus shifts from her own personal distress to the character of God. She describes Him as a "Rock" like no other. In her song, she acknowledges that strength doesn't come from human might or stability. Instead, she praises God for his ability to overturn expectations—to bring down the proud and raise up those who have been forgotten.

What strikes me is that Hannah doesn’t just celebrate an external victory; she celebrates an internal shift. She recognizes that true security is found in God’s judgment and His care for the lowly. It’s a reminder that no matter our circumstances, we have a God who sees the humble and has the power to change our landscape.

A Tale of Two Paths

The chapter then pivots sharply to a different scene: the house of Eli. We see a stark, uncomfortable contrast between the conduct of Hophni and Phinehas and the life of young Samuel.

Eli’s sons were in positions of great responsibility, yet they treated their role with utter contempt. They were "worthless men" who prioritized their own desires over the reverence due to God. It’s a sobering look at how easily entitlement can rot a person from the inside out. They were close to the temple, close to the holy things, but their hearts were miles away from the Lord.

In the middle of that corruption, we see Samuel. He "continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and with man" (1 Samuel 2:26). It’s profound that while the spiritual leadership around him was failing and crumbling, Samuel was growing. This encourages me that God doesn't need a perfect environment to work. Even in a broken culture, He is faithful to raise up those who are willing to listen and serve Him with sincerity.

Cultivating the Heart

I’ve been thinking about what this means for us today. It’s easy to focus on the roles we hold or the influence we think we should have, much like Eli’s sons did. But this chapter reminds me that God is looking for something far deeper. He is looking for a heart that is attentive, one that doesn't take its place before Him for granted.

God’s work isn't dependent on human perfection. Even when those who should be leading well fail, God remains faithful. He continues to invite us into a relationship where we grow in His favor, regardless of the chaos happening around us.

This passage leaves me with a simple question: Am I growing in favor with the Lord in the quiet places of my life, even when the world around me seems to have lost its way?
