1 Corinthians 6

Reading through 1 Corinthians 6, I am struck by how directly the Apostle Paul addresses the messy reality of the early church. It is a chapter of sharp contrasts: from the triviality of legal disputes between brothers to the profound, cosmic reality of our bodies being the temple of the Holy Spirit. As I sit with these verses today, a few reflections stand out.

The Counter-Cultural Call to Reconciliation

Paul begins by addressing the tendency of the believers to take one another to court. It is a stinging rebuke: “To have lawsuits at all with one another is already a defeat for you” (1 Corinthians 6:7). It forces me to ask: where am I more concerned with being "right" or getting "justice" than I am with the preservation of unity in the Body of Christ?

Paul’s solution isn't about finding a better lawyer; it is a call to a radical, sacrificial surrender. He asks, "Why not rather suffer wrong? Why not rather be defrauded?" (1 Corinthians 6:7). In a world obsessed with protecting our rights, Paul invites us into a life defined by the same grace we have received—a willingness to absorb hurt rather than retaliate. It is a reminder that my relationships are more significant than my claims.

Remembering Who We Are

I love the shift we see: “And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11).

We so easily identify ourselves by our past—by our failures, our habits, or the labels the world has assigned to us. But Paul demands a change in perspective. If I am in Christ, my past is not my identity. My identity is found in the fact that I am washed and justified. When I view my life through the lens of who I was, I am prone to fall back into old patterns. When I view my life through the lens of who I am now in Christ, I am empowered to live differently.

The Body as a Temple

The closing of the chapter is perhaps the most sobering and beautiful truth in the text: “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

We live in a culture that treats the body as merely a tool for self-expression or personal satisfaction. But Paul offers a higher reality. My body—and indeed, my whole life—is not my own possession to do with as I please. It is a dwelling place for the Spirit of God.

This changes how I interact with the world. It means fleeing from sexual immorality isn't just about following a set of negative rules; it is about honoring the sanctity of the place where God resides. It reframes purity as a way of acknowledging that I have been bought with a price. That price—the life of Jesus—is the ultimate marker of my value.

1 Corinthians 6 challenges me to stop living for my own rights or my own temporary satisfaction. Instead, it invites me to live as someone who is radically transformed, deeply loved, and permanently inhabited by the Spirit of God. That is a calling worth living for.
