1 Corinthians 5

This chapter hits like a cold wave, forcing us to confront the dangerous intersection of sin and spiritual pride. Paul addresses a case of blatant immorality in the Corinthian church, but his true concern seems to be less about the sin itself, and more about the church’s arrogant failure to deal with it. They were puffed up while a leaven of sin was threatening to corrupt the entire loaf.

Purging the Old Leaven

The metaphor of the leaven is instantly convicting. Paul commands them to "cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump" (1 Corinthians 5:7). This is a call to continuous, active purity. In my own heart, I see how easily a little bit of pride—or a little bit of overlooked compromise—can subtly inflate and corrupt my thinking and actions. What might start as a small, contained problem can quickly become normalized, transforming the whole culture of a community. Christ is our true Passover lamb; because of His sacrifice, we are called to live a life of sincerity and truth, free from the old yeast of malice and evil.

The Uncomfortable Call to Judgment and Discipline

The uncomfortable heart of the chapter is the call to judgement and discipline. We live in a culture that recoils from the idea of judging. But Paul draws a clear line: "Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside" (1 Corinthians 5:12-13). This is not a license for self-righteous criticism, but a solemn responsibility. When a professing believer lives in unrepentant sin, the loving, necessary act is to call them to account and, if they refuse, to treat them as an outsider. This discipline, hard as it is, serves a redemptive purpose: to bring the individual to repentance and protect the purity and witness of the church.

Holiness Over Popularity

This is a profound challenge for us today. The desire for acceptance and popularity often outweighs the commitment to holiness. But we cannot compromise on the boundaries of the Kingdom without compromising its power. We are called to be vigilant gatekeepers, not to keep people out, but to ensure that the air within our fellowship is pure, offering a genuine reflection of Christ to a watching world. The final, forceful command—"Purge the evil person from among you" (1 Corinthians 5:13)—is a powerful reminder that unity is vital, but never at the expense of truth and holiness.

This chapter forces me to ask: Am I more concerned with my church looking popular and successful to the outside world, or am I deeply committed to its spiritual health and purity? The answer to that question determines whether I am "puffed up" or properly humbled by the cross.
