1 Corinthians 3

In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul addresses the Corinthian church with a startling directness that forces us to examine our own spiritual health. He begins by contrasting spiritual maturity with worldliness, noting that he could not address them as spiritual people but as "infants in Christ" (1 Corinthians 3:1).

Spiritual Immaturity and the Milk of the Word

Paul’s observation that he had to feed the Corinthians with milk rather than solid food because they were not ready for it is a sobering challenge. He identifies the primary symptom of their spiritual immaturity: jealousy and strife. When we find ourselves caught in division or prioritizing human personalities over the Gospel, we are acting like mere humans rather than people transformed by the Spirit.

This hits close to home—it's easy to get comfortable in my faith, focusing on basic comforts and familiar doctrines, but am I pushing toward maturity? The 'jealousy and strife' Paul addresses feel less about overt conflict and more about the subtle tendency to elevate ministry personalities or programs over the simple, unifying truth of Christ.

Ministers as Co-Workers in God's Field

To correct their focus on human leaders, Paul uses the metaphors of a field and a building. He clarifies that neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything; only God, who gives the growth, is truly significant. Apollos and Paul are described simply as fellow workers, servants through whom they believed. This perspective should humble every leader and encourage every believer to keep their eyes fixed on God, the true owner of the harvest.

When I focus on who is planting or who is watering, I lose sight of the fact that it is God who gives the increase. This chapter strips away any vanity in ministry work. It reminds me that I am merely a co-worker, a tool, and that the success of the work is entirely His. This humility is freeing.

The Testing of Work by Fire

Finally, Paul warns that while Christ is the only foundation that can be laid, we must be careful how we build upon it. He speaks of a coming day when each person’s work will be revealed by fire. Building with gold, silver, and precious stones represents work done for God’s glory and in accordance with His Spirit, while wood, hay, and straw represent worldly efforts that will not survive the test. The goal is not just to build, but to build what is enduring, recognizing that we are God's temple and His Spirit dwells within us.

This warning about the fire test—building with gold, silver, and precious stones versus wood, hay, and straw—challenges my motives. Am I seeking fleeting praise or eternal value? My work must be rooted in the Spirit and aimed at God’s glory, not my own resume. The ultimate test is not how impressive the structure looks now, but what remains after the fire, confirming that Christ truly is the only foundation worth building on.

Spiritual maturity! What a scary thought! Am I as mature as I believe I am? Or am I allowing my own desires get in the way of my growth? It is easy to let my worries about other people interfere with my own faith. Am I truly mature enough spiritually to trust the Lord to take care of these people rather than trying t take care of them myself? When their habits, rub me the wrong way, can I place them in God’s hands? Or do I fuss and fume about how they aren’t as good a Christian as I am and complain that they aren’t living the way I think they should.

Lord, I ask that I seek You and allow You to set the standards of Christianity. Help me to grow and to live as You want me to live. Let me turn to You for every thing and to trust You to know what and where others stand in You and to place them in Your hands.
