1 Corinthians 2

In 1 Corinthians 2, Paul continues his critique of worldly wisdom by contrasting it with the "secret and hidden wisdom of God" (1 Corinthians 2:7). When Paul came to the Corinthians, he didn’t use lofty speech or human brilliance. Instead, he resolved to know nothing except "Jesus Christ and him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2). This simple preaching was not a sign of weakness, but a deliberate choice to let the power of the Gospel stand on its own merit rather than on persuasive words of human wisdom.

I often find myself tempted to rely on my own articulation or clever points when sharing my faith, but Paul’s resolve here is a powerful reminder to me: the true power is in the cross itself, not in how well I package the message.

The Necessity of the Holy Spirit

This transition from human logic to divine power is central to our faith. As we see in the "Gospel Gold" stories, transformative change in a person's life—from rock band atheism to repentance—is not the result of a clever argument, but of the Spirit of God reaching the heart. Human wisdom cannot grasp the things of God; they are "spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:14). We need the Holy Spirit, who searches the depths of God, to reveal these truths to us.

In my own journey, I vividly recall a time when I read a Bible verse dozens of times, yet it was completely opaque to me. Then, one morning, the Holy Spirit seemed to illuminate it, and the truth simply clicked. In complete transparency, that still happens today! That personal experience solidifies for me that true spiritual understanding is entirely a gift, not something I can earn or figure out through sheer intellect.

Modern Application

In our modern context, we are often tempted to rely on strategic leadership and professional excellence. While these have their place, they are secondary to the supernatural comfort and guidance provided by the Spirit. Whether we are navigating church leadership challenges or simply trying to live as disciples, we must rely on the Spirit's power to sift through our thoughts and keep our focus on Christ. True wisdom is not found in what we can achieve or articulate, but in what God has revealed through His Spirit to those who love Him.

I’ve learned the hard way that when I try to run my life or ministry on my own "smart" strategies, I end up feeling burnt out and frustrated. The deep, abiding peace and true effectiveness only seem to come when I consciously surrender my plans and ask the Spirit to guide my next step. My daily prayer has become less about asking for success in my endeavors and more about asking for His divine wisdom and guidance.

I missed commenting yesterday because my day got away from me. I read my Bible first thing in the morning and some mornings it’s more “first” than others. Yesterday I had finished much earlier than usual so I planned to do it later in the day but the day took on a mind of its own.

One thing that I noted in yesterday’s passage was that Paul was concerned about how the people weren’t united. They were fighting amongst themselves, One was for Paul, another for Apollos, another for Peter and still another for Messiah. We all worship the same God and the Messiah was who was crucified for our sins. How can we claim to follow one man or another? We are followers of Jesus and He is who died for our sins. The various preachers are there to preach the Good News, not to build a following for themselves. We too need to follow Christ and be watchful of the doctrine taught by various preachers. We need to read and know the Bible so we are not easily led astray by someone who appears to have it all together. Paul tells us that most of us don’t come from “high-society families”. He says, “Isn’t it obvious that God deliberately chose men and women that the culture overlooks and exploits and abuses, chose these “nobodies” to expose the hollow pretensions of the “somebodies”. (Portion of vv 26-31, MSG). We follow Christ!

Paul continues in Ch. 2, “You’ll remember, friends, that when I first came to you to let you in on God’s sheer genius, I didn’t try to impress you with polished speeches and the latest philosophy. I deliberately kept it plain and simple: first Jesus and who He is; then Jesus and what He did—Jesus crucified” (vv. 1-2 MSG). In verses 3-5, he says”…But the Message came through anyway. God’s Spirit and God’s power did it, which made it clear that your life of faith is a response to God’s power, not some fancy mental or emotional footwork by me or anyone else.” (Vv. 3-5 b MSG).

God speaks through us. We can’t make the arguments to convince people that the Gospel is true and needs to be accepted. The Holy Spirit does that. I am so thankful that the Holy Spirit takes my humble words and breathes eternal life into them and uses them to comfort people and to bring them to know God. I am so glad I don’t have to do this on my own power and strength. Praise the Lord!
