1 Corinthians 1

We've ben reading together every day for the past for months... AMAZING! As we take a break from the Psalms and head into 1 Corinthians, check out this overview from the Bible Project.
As we dive into the opening chapter of Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, we are immediately met with a powerful reminder of our identity in Christ. Paul addresses the church as those “sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:2). This isn’t an identity based on our own merit or performance, but on the grace of God given to us in Christ Jesus. It is a grounding truth: before we are workers, leaders, or even family members, we are His.

On a personal level, this radical shift from performance to grace redefines my daily focus. In a world that constantly asks, "What have you achieved today?" the Gospel asks, "Who do you belong to?" When I root my value in grace rather than my to-do list, my failures no longer define me, and my successes no longer inflate me. It allows me to work from a place of rest rather than for a sense of worth.

The Peril of Preferences: Division in the Church

However, Paul quickly shifts to address a painful reality: division within the body. The Corinthians were quarreling, identifying themselves by their favorite teachers—Paul, Apollos, or Cephas. This tendency to divide based on human preference or loyalty is still a struggle today. We are reminded that Christ is not divided. Our unity is found not in agreeing on every minor point, but in being united in the same mind and judgment concerning the Gospel.

We see these same cracks in our modern landscape, where divisions over worship styles, theological nuances, or political allegiances often overshadow our shared confession. To foster genuine unity, we must take practical steps: practicing active listening, choosing to assume the best of our brothers and sisters, and intentionally centering our conversations on the person of Jesus rather than our personal preferences. Unity requires the hard work of humility.

The Divine Paradox: The Power of the Cross

Finally, the chapter culminates in the profound paradox of the power and foolishness of the cross. To those who are perishing, the message of a crucified Savior is absolute foolishness. It doesn’t fit human logic or worldly expectations of power. Yet, to those who are being saved, it is the very power of God. God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and what is weak to shame the strong. This levels the ground for all of us: no human being can boast in the presence of God; our only boast is in the Lord.

In our modern, success-driven world, the cross remains "foolish." We value upward mobility, strength, and visible results, yet God reveals His greatest power through a symbol of apparent defeat and weakness. Boasting in the Lord means acknowledging that every good thing we have—wisdom, righteousness, and redemption—is a gift. It frees us from the exhausting need to prove our own significance, as our significance is already secured in the work of another.

Ultimately, 1 Corinthians 1 calls us back to a posture of deep humility. By remembering our shared identity, guarding against the pride of preference, and clinging to the paradox of the cross, we find the strength to live as a truly united body. Let our lives be a reflection not of our own wisdom, but of the transformative power of the Gospel that brings us all together at the foot of the cross.
